Hey everyone! Just picked up Whitehack. Will use it later this year for my Christmas event! Can somebody explain how contests are supposed to work?

I don‘t understand how it‘s relevant to compare unsuccessful rolls to each other. Following the example in the rules (2nd Ed. p. 15) if one party fails at charming the third party and the second party fails at convincing them, what does „failing more“ indicate? Thanks in advance!
