Session 13 of Whitehack/Deep Carbon Observatory last night.

Session 13 of Whitehack/Deep Carbon Observatory last night. There was a distinct possibility of a TPK considering the situation at the end of session 12. Blain the Swordmaster was in a particularly precarious situation. In the end, the TPK wasn't to be, and a very entertaining session was had.

Blain however didn't survive.

DCO spoilars follow...

The giant from chapter 7 had followed them down the stairs at location 10. The party and all their companions had escaped across the chain well to location 12, except for Blain who stayed behind to fight the 30ft monstrosity.

Stuart (Blain's player) did pretty good at first, damaging it's eye, cutting off one of it's hands (nullifying it's horrendous 'double grasp and twist' attack), he then voluntarily climbed into it's mouth and started hacking away. This, combined with some support from his Wise companions managed to get the giant down to a very bloodied half-HP and it withdrew, climbing back up the chain well.

Well Blain wasn't having that.

He climbs up after the thing, thinking that if they let it go it will recover and return, better to kill it now while they have the momentum.

He got one hit in before being picked up and crushed to death between giant rubbery teeth.

The rest of the session went equally well with some fun RP exchanges with the denizens of locations 13 and 15. The players were very pleased to finally get some inkling as to WTF a Deep Carbon Observatory actually is.

So we are into the final stretch now. It's very exciting, and Blain's replacement, a Wise tattooed woman named Nomad, looks like she's going to be a very interesting addition to the group.

  1. That's a great character that exemplifies Whitehack. It is also a character true to a concept, and not just built to "roll" well.

  2. Would like to know what the 'Living Tattoo' does.

  3. He is planning on using that to create weapons and armour as required. I expect that he will probably try to strangle someone with it at some point too though.

  4. Doug Kilmer In response to your comment about building characters to concept: Part of that is that I let my players play whatever they want (and Whitehack makes that possible), part of it is the strict rules for generating stats. I have my players roll 3d6 down the line and they are only allowed to swap over one pair of rolls. This should be enough to create whatever character they choose, but it will probably leave them with one or two problematic stats which they wish was higher.
