New here and trying to get my bearings on a new system...
So am I correct in understanding that, without a house rule, only Wise PC's can ever learn miracles. I assume the "monster" stat blocks in the GM's section do not apply to PC's, so an elf PC (one who took the elf group) would only be affected by the "innate miracle ability" listed with elves if they are also of the Wise class (thus having miracle ability for the group to affect)... Correct? Or am I missing something? Thank you in advance.

Your call- make it up- that's the spirit of the 'Hack!
ReplyDeleteI get that... My question is about what is written. I prefer to know how far off the rails one is going. If I understand the original intent, it makes "haking" easier. Sometimes, the reason a rule exists may not be very clear and when understood, can change how one may choose to proceed. I hope I made sense there...
ReplyDeleteYes, RAW, Wise get Miracles.
ReplyDeleteYes, RAW, monster blocks do not apply to PCs.
^ Thank you.
ReplyDeleteCool. The 'Hack is pretty stellar for opening the top of your mind hatch and seeing what you can build. I encourage you to let your players have what they want re: Miracles but make them justify or inflict mechanical limitations.
ReplyDeleteOf interest in the Free Form Magic Creation Department is Maze Rats by Ben Milton. Found in here:

Pay what you want, so, free if you want it. You roll a d6 for spell format, then on d100 tables for each part of the format. Then the player and referee agree to spell circle- 0 to 5- which equates to a Miracle's HP cost. Helpful for spell creation in just about any game, really.
One of the only "hacks" I am considering at the moment, is to allow species such as elves to take miracles at the start for high wisdom in trade for the healing issue. They will never gain more miracles then that initial 1 or 2 and they must use them in a slot, either sacrificed (in the case of a Strong) or a swappable slot (like a Deft). Probably not being terribly clear... Just thinking in "forum form"...
ReplyDeleteWhat you are providing sounds fine. If you scroll back through this community to about December you should find a link to two multiclass Whitehack classes I wrote. Basically they are Strong/Wise and Deft/Wise and either could be useful for you.

ReplyDeleteSome other simple hacks for gving elf PC's some magic:
ReplyDelete-Wise: Allow "elf' to be both the race and vocation for the character, opening up a group slot for the character (try to figure out what kind of magic constitutes "elf-magic".
-Deft: Allow the elf Deft character to attune herself to "elf" giving her a once a day "elf-miracle" (in place of a "normal" attunement slot).
-Strong: allow the elf to exchange the "power from killed enemies" for a minor "elf-miracle" (0hp cost) usable once/day or week for every 2 level (round down) or so.
Brian Ashford I actually loved these classes... Commented on their posting even. I have tried fixing the elf "bow, blade and spell" thing in WhiteHack but have had little success.
