Deal with the Devil

Deal with the Devil

WHers, I'm thinking of using a 'Deal with the Devil' option on character death. I think Dugneon World has this; or maybe it's just something a friend used in DW. Other than "betrayal", do any of you smart GMs have ideas for why the Devil would return you to the land of the living? Bangs and Hooks saught.

  1. For fun and profit I'd imagine. She'd enjoy the chaos that you would cause, or would somehow use you to advance her plans. It really depends on the nature of the Devil.

  2. Any devil will always want powerful individuals who owe him down (up?) On the material plane. Occasionally it will call on the PC to do something evil. Each task a step worse than the last. I don't see a happy ending here.

  3. to clarify, I maybe meant more Hook or Bang related...

    * "you will continue with a life of an adventurer but for every life you take I will claim the soul of one child."

    * "you can return to the land of the living but you will be cursed to eventually join the legions of the Spider Fiend." (Con/Wis/ST per session vs gradual progression to some hideous spider hybrid. (ed. not a judgement call on spider-hybrids. they're genericaly hideous.)

  4. I'd be tempted to also give the character a class appropriate power (Attunement to fire/Miracle of innermost desires/An instant kill Strong combat option like the demon arm in Princess Mononoke). These powers would be very useful but they should always make the situation worse.

  5. ^ ooh. A "Pact" Group on a Stat might be good too. Some sort of contractual anchor tagging things for ++/- -

  6. Ah, OK.

    * You no longer heal naturally and your devil patron will only heal you in exchange for sending it souls.

    * You have one year to achieve your task, then the devil will require you to kill three people of his choice. Refuse to do so and your body starts to decompose.

    * The devil requires that you recover and destroy texts concerning how to defeat and actually kill a devil, once this is done, you will be free and alive. The players will probably come to the conclusion that using these texts to kill the devil is their better option, unfortunately the text actually summons a rival demon, if the players kill him they risk handing even more power to the devil they are indebted to. Maybe they need to do a deal with this demon too...

  8. Cool! Check out Divine Debt (p. 35), the Cursed Wand of Resurrection (p. 43), Ghost Form (p. 19) and perhaps even Corruption (p. 30) for inspiration!

  9. Mmmmmm. Corruption, of course. Great call. I'll add that too.

  10. How about a called out Assassination of some goody 2 shoes or more than one. A string of them but the next one will be, 'just one more'.

  11. Currently, my Deal with the Devil looks like this...

You may either Ghost through the rest of the session and then ride The Black Road to make your deal or you can go straight there for a result.

    d6
    1. You are absorbed into the belly of Chaos until time loses meaning.
2-5. You enter a bargain (as culled from above: Quest for Cult / Infected with Curse / Return as undead / etc.)
    6. Your time is not now.

In any case, you are -1 to one Stat as a scar and receive d6 Corruption for your bargain.
