I'm looking to expand on the archetypal examples for the main three classes. What have you come across in your games to add to the core examples?

Strong, examples: warriors, guards, brigands, knights, bounty hunters, barbarians

Deft, examples: thieves, wandering monks, spies, marksmen, rangers or assassins

Wise, examples: wizards, priests, alchemists, exorcists, demonologists, druids, runecarvers, bards, mad scientists

  1. I'm a big fan of this "D100 Class Triangle". I don't know the original source I stumbled across it some time ago and have a printed copy for players to look at when making characters.

  2. Remember that Strong characters don't have to be fighter types. Strong archer works well, you end up with a sniper who can control the flow of the battle. Strong Thief is a thug with some sneaky ability. A Strong Monk can take a bearing and hit back hard and still knows the truth of existence.

    Deft could be swordsmen, storytellers, diplomats sailors, postmen, and potion grenadiers.

    Most of your suggested classes could be Wise too. A wise warrior who can perform incredible tricks with his sword, a wise Knight who can see what the enemy forces will do before they have arrived on the battlefield. A wise bounty Hunter who can smell his quarry from miles away. A wise Thief who never looks out of place and is never suspected.

    It's a very permissive system, try to disconnect the class type from the potential characters or you are just restricting your own options. Get your players to choose the type of character they want to play and then talk about which of the class best represents their vision.

    If they want to play a knight, it could just mean they want a Strong character with a sword, some plate mail and a horse. But maybe they would enjoy a Wise Knight who has seen it all and the weight of this knowledge both weighs him down and helps the party through the toughest of times. Or a Deft Knight who is attuned to his sword and his father's barony, is hard to fight somebody who knows every rock and bramble in the land. Brave and Fortunate both work effortlessly too.

    Suddenly, when all five of your players want to play a knight it isn't a problem, it's awesome.

  4. Deft: forest elemental herbalist with moss dog, toe person accountant driven by making decisions which create as much paperwork as possible. Strong: labourer always seeking to prove he can lift heavy objects. Wise: demonologist with multiple personality disorder, always makes two decisions then rolls a d2 to see which is chosen.

    Brian Ashford that list is straight from the book. I was looking to expand out of it to get to a wider set of examples for players. Thanks for those.

  6. I need better examples of Wise and Strong. Particularly Strong... I personally find it the hardest class to push from just a beefy manifestation.

  7. Ah ok, i see... Although, i would personally move away from examples of the stereotypes. One of the biggest selling points of Whitehack is the versatility of the classes and i wouldn't want to undersell that.

    Still, a few other which would fit the basic fighter-type could be:
    Gladiator
    Gang Thug
    Paladin
    Pirate

  8. Thanks, Brian Ashford. I'm totally down with that sympathy. I'm putting notes together to maybe work on a quickstart character creation page next. Want to modify those examples to not box players in.
