My players are so used to the idea that high-level characters can attack more than once per round (especially after seeing Legolas in action, and the Youtube videos of Lars Andersen) that to lure them to Whitehack I’m going to have to come up with rules for multiple strikes above and beyond the Free Attacks discussed on page 18.

In the spirit of Whitehack itself I wanted to keep it simple so that it wasn’t necessary to add in weapons proficiency rules. At level 5 the character gets two attacks per round and at level 10 three attacks. 

Additionally, there are styles. 

Archery is self explanatory, as is single weapon use.

Sword & Shield: I prefer shield use to be a more active choice. I suggest removing shield from AC calculation and instead making Sword & Shield a fighting style that allows an attempt to block hits that aren’t criticals.

(The same could apply for quarterstaff and some pole arms, as well as parrying daggers used with swords.) 

I propose that there would be one free block per round until level 5, when there would be two, and level 10 when there would be three. Additional blocks count as a full attack. To block, roll to hit against enemy. (Criticals can’t be blocked.) Small shield = -1, medium shield = 0, large shield = +1 Pole arm is -1

You might ask, then, why anyone would use ONLY a sword, rather than sword and shield, which might be an argument against shield rules. On the other hand, shields wouldn’t have been carried so often throughout multiple historical eras if they hadn’t been useful.

Hand-to-Hand weapons mastery enables double attacks from the start, so that like trained martial artists and boxers two effective blows can be landed quickly. At level five that would be 4, and at level 10, 6. Martial artists can use their feet, which would probably provide a +1 modifier. Maybe there should be an armor class modifier from level 5 on, or the ability to use the shield rules to step in close and block a blow, or simply to sidestep.
