Greetings Whitehackers!

Greetings Whitehackers! I hope everyone is doing well, and for those of you in the Northern Hemisphere enjoying the beginning of Summer. :)

Time has been a scarce commodity lately, and in turn my gaming has suffered as is I'm sure with some of you has well. To try and remedy this I've been exploring Play-by-Post and it seems like it could be a good alternative.

I've looked into a few PbP services and the best I've found so far is https://www.tavern-keeper.com/. Are any of you familiar with it, or have played in PbP games?

I'm going to be setting up a Whitehack / Yoon-Suin PbP on TavernKeeper soon, and if you are interested to participate please let me know. I already have one player, and will accept another 4 or so.

Cheers!

  1. I'd like to join! I've done a lot of PbP over the years. I've used Mythweavers for the most part. Got burned out on it, but mainly because Mythweavers sucks when posting on mobile, something Tavern Keeper seems to support just fine. Interested in giving it a shot!

  2. I'd be interested. I'm running a game of Lords of Gossamer and Shadow using Roll20.net forums at the moment. I'd love to try out Yoon Suin in Whitehack.

  3. You would be most welcome Dean Baker and Barry O'Leary!

  4. I would also be interested. I did a game PbP years ago.

  5. I may be interested as well. Never used Tavern Keeper for PbP, but if the mobile interface is good that will go a long way towards keeping the post rate high.

  6. The mobile interface is really good compared to the other options out there. I agree 100% that easy and convenient access pushes post rates. Let's wait and see! ...and welcome Nick. :D

  7. Cool. Stoked for this. Nice to have something to do during my commute.

  8. I'll be creating the campaign project on Tavern-Keeper later today and will populate the wiki with some player info etc.

    I'll keep you posted!

  9. Dean Baker Barry O'Leary Doug Kilmer Nick Serluco - can you guys please create yourself an account on TK and post your usernames? Thanks!

  10. Great! I'll wrap up the initial info asap so we can roll up characters and get our first posts going this coming week. I'm looking forward to this!

  11. For Yoon-Suin, are there special character concepts we're supposed to adhere to, or is it anything goes?

  12. Dean Baker To introduce Yoon Suin you could have the PCs be vikings for example, and their ship goes astray. They end up in Yoon Suin and the players find out what it's like. After that you can have the players make up local characters.
Or you can just start off with locals, or a mix. There's no wrong way, really.
Edit: I thought I was replying to a different thread. Let's see what Jacques van der Merwe says!

  13. If you have a collective preference regarding being either strangers-in-a-strange-land or being locals let me know. In a previous campaign that I ran for my regular group, they were strangers and we quickly realised that this had a lot of negative impact (not knowing the local language, your unique appearance, trustworthiness, etc) - but this can add some flavour to the game.

I like players contributing to the world building - it's a key part to my games, so feel free to suggest/recommend/influence as much as you want. :)

I'll send out the invites when I get home later after work.

  14. I quite fancy playing a Viking now. :)

  15. A group of Viking marauders find themselves beached on one of the Topaz Isles shortly after sailing into a sudden (and rather suspicious) storm....

    Yeah that could work.... :D

  16. If you wanted to do vikings, could instead be like a trading ship, East India Trading Company, etc. That way, you can have a variety of character types on the ship.

  17. Oooh, I'm thinking Wise Weather Witch. Will see how I roll though.

    ReplyDelete
  18. you will be able to swop values between one pair of attributes so Wise Weather Witch it is.... :)

  19. Awesome. Here's what I've got so far. Will finish up once I can roll dice.
(This is if we are doing Vikings, that is. I can change some basic things later too.)

  20. Greetings peeps - so it looks like Tavern Keeper has gone down. I'm not too sure if it's coming back or not, I hope it does! The developer of the service last blogged in 2014 that it costs him $150 per month to host it.

Do you have any recommendations for an alternative service? Shall we take this over to Roll20? There are quite a few groups using Roll20 for async games.

  21. Yep, I'm running a forum game on Roll20, but I guess it's better at running live games.

  22. Mythweavers is an excellent site for PbP. I'm afraid I can't do a second video campaign.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yeah I think I looked at MW a while ago. We could also use Slack which has web and mobile clients. It could work out pretty well actually. Create a channel for each roleplay scene. I'm pretty certain that there's already a dice-rolling app...

Speaking of video campaigns... what's happening with yours?

  24. Here's a link. I've been a member on this site for a long time. It's got a great community, and lots of features. Tavern Keeper was a bit more modern (TK uses WYSIWYG formatting, MW uses BBcode. TK is also more mobile friendly), but still, Mythweavers is very accessible.

  25. My Hangouts campaign is on hold for the summer, due to it being too intensely hot in my computer room, and as I live in a highrise apartment, opening a window in the middle of the night would create too much noise for my neighbors. Will start it up again very soon though, depending on the weather. It hasn't finished, don't worry!

  26. Are you guys familiar with Storium? I've been looking at various PbP services and reading blog posts about PbP-friendly RPG systems. I have to admit that I quite like the idea of Storium. I managed to locate a game that fits the typical Fantasy RPG mould which I've linked to below. I was interested to see how combat was handled...
